Street art: Organic Matters (made in 2018 using aerosol and acrylic)
Meaning and message: The meaning behind the name is a play on the term ‘Organic Matter’ and reflects activities that take place in the Justice Precinct while also relating to natural subject matter. The native flowers and birds represent Christchurch’s Botanical Gardens. The art features the native birds of New Zealand: the tui, and the rifleman.

About the Artist: Ash Sisson grew up in Wellington, painting skateboards and walls in his parent’s garage on pieces of wood. His parents were supportive of his art and eventually helped him get to bigger outdoor environments, eventually leading to murals in Christchurch and Wellington. His style focuses largely on public and private commissions. The subjects for his art range from birds, portraits, abstract objects, and personal motifs. He often combines several of these styles to create contemporary pieces of art that are unique to his ‘post- graffiti’ style.

Tui
The white tassel under Tui’s neck symbolises cowardice in traditional Māori stories. It means life, confidence and spiritual harmony.
Rifleman/ Titipounamu.The bird’s English name refers to the green military jackets worn by New Zealand riflemen in the 19th century. The male rifleman has bright yellow-green plumage, similar to the colour of the coats. The Māori name is a combination of the words tītiti, which means “a mirage of”, and pounamu, which means “greenstone”. This name refers to the bird’s green colouring and its quick movements.
