DESIGN

This mural provides a new perspective on street art and demonstrates the rich heritage of a time past, remembering the defining moments that make up New Zealand history. It celebrates the spirit of exploration and creativity, with a new perspective on the three-dimensional. The street art contains a wide coverage of New Zealand history, grounded in the here and now, with an upward view to the future. It is New Zealand’s only central city farmers’ market building.

“The wall is brought to life with references to central city heritage, remembering defining moments and telling a story of Kate Sheppard and the broader women’s suffrage movement, which started in Christchurch.”

REFERENCE OF KATE SHEPPARD

This street art refers to the New Zealand activist, Kate Sheppard. Kate Sheppard was the same person who fought for Woman’s right to vote and wasp recognized as the Leader.  This was designed by Josh Thompson, DTR Crew (local artists) and Oi YOU. This was made to be a 3D Design.

REFERENCE OF EDWARD JOLLIE.

Edward Jollie was a politician and surveyor for the government. He designed the city layout and took part in local politics. He made an autobiography of his reminiscences for his children’s benefit.

The mural takes advantage of the two peaks on either side of the facade to trick the brain into thinking it is three-dimensional from a range of angles, a key feature that has been capturing the attention of passers-by.

HONOURING SIR EDMUND HILLARY

‘Hillary & Tenzing Mountain Equipment & Adventure Goods’ is a play on the exploration of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first    climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, found between Nepal and Tibet.

MAIN PURPOSE

The main purpose of ‘Riverside Market: Homage to the Past’ is to pay respects to the great earthquake that happened in 2011. 185 people died in this earthquake. This is also to honor every else on the building such as, Kate Sheppard, Sir Edmund Hillary, and Edward Jollie. This mural serves this purpose very well as it really does pay respect to the past.
